We were so sorry to hear about the passing of one of our very familiar neighbors, Susan Meredith, last week on January 26th.
Susan would come down to the village from her beautiful waterfront cabin most every day on her motorized vehicle to collect her mail and pick up groceries. Susan has lived on the island for 30 of her 91 years and enjoyed island living to its fullest - often seen paddling in her kayak around the islands.
Did you know that Susan authored a book called Alaska's Search for a Killer - A Seafaring Medical Adventure, 1946-1948 which was published in 1998 by Alaska Public Health Nursing History Association?
Having contracted polio as a child - her many idle days were spent reading adventure books where she dreamed of becoming a cowgirl or a sailor. As a young woman, Susan earned a degree in bacteriology and worked in the State of Washington Public Health Laboratory and the U.S. Army's 9th Service Command Laboratory. She had the chance of a lifetime offered to her during World War II when she heard that the Health Department was putting a public health mobile unit into service on a ship and they needed a bacteriologist. Susan's sense of adventure kicked in and she was hired aboard the floating health clinic named "MV Hygiene" whose primary mission was to screen the entire Alaskan coastal population for tubercolosis. Her book records many of her adventures during this time.
We will miss seeing you around the village, Susan - our condolences go out to your family.

During the holidays the Roche Harbor Neighborhood Association
held a food drive in aid of the Friday Harbor Food Bank called "Pass along the Holiday Spirit".
It was organized by neighbor, Jerry Swalling, who positioned donation bins in the Roche Harbor Company Store and on the walkway leading up to to Madrona Bar & Grill during the annual Christmas Block Party.
A big thank you to the many neighbors who helped and donated, and a hearty thanks from all the islanders you have helped! Let's do it again next Christmas!

On Wednesday afternoon, November 4th, a fire occurred on D dock at Roche Harbor Marina. This is the account given by Troy Buck, Assistant Harbormaster at Roche Harbor who was on the scene at the time.
"The fire was contained due to the excellent response of the Roche Harbor Marina Staff, who charged the suppression system, took fire hoses, 20 lb. extinguishers and a 150 lb. extinguisher to the scene and prepped the Roche Harbor fire boat to have at the ready. They made sure everyone was evacuated.
The San Juan County Fire Department, Town of Friday Harbor, and the San Juan County Sheriff's department all responded in a timely manner and were able to extinguish the fire rapidly. This was done in a communal fashion using Roche Harbor's fire equipment, the San Juan County's volunteer firemen, a great new asset to San Juan Island - "The Guardian" Sheriff's all-purpose utility/fire boat, the Town of Friday Harbor's fire boat "Confidence", and the people from Vessel Assist.
We are so grateful that no-one was injured, - SAFETY FIRST! The loss of two vessels was unfortunate, however, the damage was limited. This was due to all persons involved - both within Roche Harbor and the community. Roche Harbor would like to thank everyone for the excellent response and help in containing the fire.
An investigation is still pending at this time and boat owners of D-dock vessels were all contacted. The clean-up was, and is still, being performed in a timely and environmentally conscious manner."
