Artist Booths now open!

Time to get out to Roche Harbor and check out the artist booths.  We have lots of new things to show you - and, of course, still have some of your favorite items - jewelry, fine candy confections, paintings, photo shots of the harbor and surrounding areas, alpaca yarn - you name it and you will probably find it there!  The artists have been busy all winter making items for you to purchase while you are with us.  They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the Labor Day Weekend, so be sure and stop by and meet with these talented and exciting artists.

Thanks for the picture - Kim Bertrand - from Booth 6 where you will find loads of great shots taken by Michael Bertrand Photography.

It was all smiles recently for one island family - the Sandwiths!  Debbie Sandwith - Roche Harbor's Company Store Manager, Pat Sandwith Sr. who works for Roche Harbor Water Company, along with son Pat and grand-daughter Ali, all traveled down to Cal Poly University to be part of daughter Stephanie's graduation.  With over 3,000 students graduating, the event took place in the football stadium where Stephanie received her diploma in Animal Science. It was a great and exciting day for everyone.  Congratulations Steph!

Looking for something to do while you are on the island?

The Interpretive Center at Lime Kiln Point State Park on the west side of the island is open daily 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. thru September 14th for you to explore.  Just a short walk down the pretty pathway to the lighthouse once you have reached the park.

Why not try a tour of the lighthouse available every Thursday and Saturday evenings from 7 pm until sunset thru Labor Day.  What a super place to catch a beautiful sunset.

The Park is also offering Low Tide Discovery Walks on Tuesdays and Fridays scattered through the summer - dependent of course, upon our low tides.  See the San Juan Community Calendar for the times.

The tours are all free and it is suggested you dress for the weather and don't forget to take along your bottle of water!

Coming to Roche Harbor to perform on the Madrona Bar & Grill Deck this weekend is San Juan Island's own Devorah.  With her pop/rock/jazz genre, she has many followers of her great talents as a wonderful singer.  You will love the bubbling personality of her performances and her "firecracker" attitude!

Devorah will perform on the bar deck on Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st from 3 to 6 p.m. -- exactly the right time for you to enjoy a cocktail while listening to her performance.  If you are not going to be around this weekend, no worries... you can hear her again the afternoons of June 14 & 15 - same time, same place.  Of course, if you will be with the Bayliner/Olympic Rendezvous on June 7 & 8, she will be playing on the bar deck in the afternoon, as well as in the Gazebo with a trio including Geoffrey Castle - both evenings.  She's a busy gal - and well worth listening to!  Check out her website at www.devorahmusic.com.

With Memorial Day Weekend coming up next weekend, we thought you might want to know who is playing where!  Roche Harbor always has the best entertainment for your enjoyment while you are spending the holiday with us - and this year we have a great lineup of artists to keep you entertained.

Playing in the Market Square is Jazz Pianist, David Bayley.  His smooth music can be heard each day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. outside the The Company Store.

Grab a cup of coffee or "super ice cream cone" from Beechtree Espresso and come listen!  You will really like this treat in the middle of the day.

Okay all boaters and "parrot-heads"!   Back by popular demand is one of your favorite artists who sings with his own tropical style and sounds just like Jimmy Buffet!  It is Dave Calhoun who will be performing on the West Lawn - (and that is so you can hear his fabulous sounds from your boat)!  What a way to get a party started!

He is playing each day - Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.   Don't miss him!

Your friend, and our friend, Keith Busha is singing his heart out for you on the Madrona Bar Deck from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Come and enjoy a cocktail - or dinner in the Madrona Grill - while listening to his great mellow sounds.

And playing for your late night enjoyment in the Madrona Bar & Grill Gazebo is long-time favorite - the Jim Basnight Band.

The band, fronted by Jim Basnight on vocals and guitars, combines Jazz, Blues, Country, and Acoustic Rock flavors in some of the finest pop songs around. You will want to dance your socks off to this band!

Playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.   Come have some fun!

Roche Harbor is certainly back in the swing for the summer!

Today was the first Employee Appreciation Barbecue for all our employees.  Along with the fun of raffle prizes, many mean hamburgers were served up by our two faithful employee barbecue cooks, Troy Buck from the marina serving up his "Buck-Burgers" and Scott Leeming from Security with his "Cheesy-Leemings".  Of course, our Master of Ceremonies was the GM, Brent Snow, who delighted everyone with his quick wit whilst performing the wildly anticipated raffle.  And as always, Rod Wiese who, along with Debbie Sandwith, sets the event up and makes sure everything runs smoothly.

We welcome all our new employees and hope they will enjoy this summer season at Roche Harbor - we are pleased you are here!

So what better way to open up for the summer season at Roche Harbor!  This absolutely beautiful display of tulips and hyacinths are at their peak!

Usually, our garden designer, Christy Erickson from Zizania Ltd., will start designing and planting our flower beds and containers with summer arrangements right now, but who could possibly pull up this beautiful display of white hyacinths and pink Angelique tulips?

If you want to visit Roche Harbor just to check out the spring flowers, then be sure to check this flowerbed out in the Pavilion Courtyard before it is replanted.

Roche Harbor is well known for its beautiful gardens where visitors enjoy walking the many pathways to view the exotic and sometimes unusual plantings designed by Christy, and maintained by Roche Harbor's head gardener, Alana.   Textures and colors are important in Christy's designs, and she always comes up with wonderful arrangements combining those elements.

Pictured to the left are fritillaria in bloom.

For more pictures of her designs check out Christy's website at: www.Zizanialtd.com

These flowers go out to wish two of our employees a speedy "Get Well Soon" wish.

Bobbi Terry, from our Accounting Department recently underwent surgery on her knee - and we hope is now resting comfortably at home.  It will be several weeks before she is back to work, but we certainly want to wish her well while she is recuperating.  Keep up with those exercises Bobbi!

Darlene TroBaugh, Gift Shop Manager, is in St. Joseph's Hospital today with respiratory problems.  She will most probably be recuperating in Bellingham with her husband for a while before returning to the island.

We want you both to know that you are in our thoughts -- and we all hope you will be enjoying better health again very soon.

Roche Harbor Gift Shop has loads of new items that have arrived for you to come look at while you are at Roche Harbor.

Yes, we know you like to shop while you are here, so we sent our Gift Shop Manager, Darlene, off on buying trips all winter long to bring fresh, new items for you to check out.  Here are just a few...

Pictured here is a great line of key-chain watches - for the man in your life - in the da-vinci line made famous in Beverly Hills, Paris and London.  Also, talking of distinction, how about a magnetic checkers set - perfect for the boat - and with a classy "Roche Harbor" name stamped in one corner.  Great ideas for Father's Day!

Tizo Design puts out a really neat line of silver-plated cocktail forks and Darlene has picked them out to appeal to boaters - complete with shells and starfish on the ends.  And while we are on the subject of boaters, you might like these neat stainless steel measuring cups (pictured to the right of the forks) with fish on the handles.  Make your galley sparkle this year!

These bright and airy pillows by Magnolia Casual are perfect for your boat.  Weather resistant and fade resistant they make the perfect choice for boat or patio.  They come in three sizes - 24x24, 18x24 and 14x14.

Now, what yacht captain would not enjoy receiving one of these log books?

Check it out at Roche Harbor Gift Shop and get logged in!

Resortwear for the entire family - with T-shirts and sweatshirts galore - you can pick from great brand names such as Gear, SDI, Camp David, Sope Creek and Ouray.

We will find something in just your size!

This patent leather purse is one of the Bingham by Dynasty lines - in this year's fabulously soft shade of green.  That's what we could call "stylin' in Roche Harbor".

Here is the same shade of green in a lightweight hooded shirt by Ouray - perfect for those early morning or evening walks around the village or the marina.

At Roche Harbor we enjoy helping our employees celebrate - especially when they are great employees who have been with us for a number of years!

Brent Snow, General Manager, wanted to wish our marina employee, Ester Hernandez, a happy birthday from the resort - so with the help of Julie Curley and Lisa Jackson, a surprise birthday party was planned for her.  Employees gathered on the decorated Lime Kiln Cafe deck where they all were treated to a free lunch in her honor.

Ester has been working at Roche Harbor for the last thirteen years, when she began in our Housekeeping department and now splits her time between working in Housekeeping during the winter, and in the Marina from May to November. Ester and her husband, Filberto, make the best working team at Roche Harbor where they have both played a vital role for the resort and are both an integral part of the marina.   If you see them around the resort on your next visit, be sure to say "Hola"!

We wish you a very happy birthday, Ester, with many more great years to come!

Here is some exciting news!  San Juan Outfitters will be opening up in the marina at Roche Harbor.   It will be Roche Harbor's new Whale Watch, Sea Kayak and Adventure Tour Company taking over from the very successful San Juan Safaris who have been in Roche Harbor for the past 12 years.

If you have been whale watching or kayaking from Roche Harbor in the last ten years or so you will be sure to recognize new owners Brian Goodremont, former Operations Manager for San Juan Safaris along with his wife Rachel, who is one of our very talented artists showing her work in the village artist booths.

San Juan Outfitters will continue to provide high quality tours from Roche Harbor, as well as from Friday Harbor.  They will specialize in half day and full day kayak tours, multi-sport tours and custom tours which can include kayaking, hiking and cycling.  Lots of fun for visitors to indulge themselves into and see just how beautiful the Northwest waters are.

Brian and Rachel are very familiar with the islands - they have been living on San Juan Island for the past 12 years and are very excited about their new project.  Brian will be involved with daily operations at Roche Harbor conducting whale watch and kayak tours while Rachel will work part-time at Roche Harbor and still pursue her portrait artist work for display in the artist booths.

If you are looking for adventure while visiting Roche Harbor - you have just found the perfect way!  Check out their new website for more information at www.sanjuanislandoutfitters.com.

If you would like to email Brian and Rachel you can reach them at info@sanjuanislandoutfitters.com or call him at

866-810-1483      or     360-378-1962

with your reservation.  Reservations are being taken now for this summer season - just give Bryan a call and he will set you up for adventure!

Congratulations to you Brian and Rachel on your new project at Roche Harbor - we wish you lots of very successful whale watching and kayak tours!
